The thunder from the east was always associated with the Golden Horde and coming of the Mongol Empire under Genghis Khan. But since the 80’s, that thunder in the east now refers to the sound of metal driving forward from Japan. The latest band to send out their shock waves from the archipelago are Risingfall who delve into a trad metal sound with their debut album ‘Rise or Fall’.

As an album, ‘Rise or Fall’ is very much on the rise with little here being about the fall and after a plethora of EP’s, compilations and live releases, Risingfall are finally delivering that long awaited debut album. This is a release which is trad metal to the core, yet this isn’t a release which longs for the past, instead, ‘Rise or Fall’ straddles time with one leg in a nostalgic past with one foot firmly rooted in the modern era. Through a warm, familiar production tracks such as ‘Rock Fantasy’, ‘English Motor Biker’ and ‘Master of the Metal’ show a band capable of being tongue in cheek with a high dose of cheese whilst delivering a heavy metal sound which has all the enjoyability of Judas Priest, Riot and Satan whilst obviously nodding to those bands which went before them like Loudness and Anthem.

If you are the sort of person who loves the sound of true, classic heavy metal and modern trad metal, then this debut album from Risingfall is a great album to add to your 2022 collection.
