Thrash metal is as thrash metal does. But what happens when thrash metal begins to incorporate other elements into its work? Well, it’s the 21st century, its not unusual for elements of power, groove, death and black to be involved in that thrash sound. Well, then you get Kill Ritual who are back with their latest offering ‘Kill Star Black Mark Dead Hand Pierced Heart’.

That album name may be a real mouthful, but one thing that Kill Ritual do with this release is keep it simple and keep it concise. The recent years for Kill Ritual have been massively fruitful and creative and once again with ‘Kill Star…’, there isn’t just a thrash metal tone but there’s just enough of power metal touches here to give this release something extra. If you’re an ultra-thrash metal purist, don’t be disillusioned with the mere mention of power metal because there are no tits or dragons here. Instead, tracks such as ‘The Whore of War’, ‘The Smell of Death’ and ‘7 Knives’ all have the appeal of Imagika, Iced Earth and even the Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens drive of Charred Walls of the Damned with a riptide undercurrent of Hatriot, Forbidden and Heathen with a solid drive of thrash metal delivered properly with full on aggression and a take no prisoner’s attitude.

There isn’t anything here that hasn’t been done before but fans of thrash are bound to fully enjoy ‘Kill Star…’ because the album sticks to its guns with some no frills, no gimmicks, balls to the wall thrash with just enough extra to open it to a wider demographic.

"no frills, no gimmicks, balls to the wall thrash"
