Heavy Metal Therapy: No Entry for the Sandman

Need to sleep? Can’t sleep? Keep thinking ‘if I get to sleep now, I’ll get X hours sleep’ or ‘Why can’t I just go to sleep??’. Yeah . . . . help does it? I know, I do it. I know you probably do it. I know you know it’s not helpful and yet we all do it!

Yep – if you’re not able to sleep there’s nothing better and more conducive to getting a good night’s sleep than laying there pressuring yourself to get to sleep.

We all require sleep. There’s been and continue to be sleep studies into the effects of sleep deprivation which include Randy Gardner in 1964 staying awake for a record 11 days (it’s not recommended and please do not try it!) where he was observed to be moody, paranoid and suffer hallucinations in addition to the usual/expected concentration issues that come with lack of sleep.

Other studies suggest similar side effects. Why we sleep or what sleep does for us has a few different theories but mostly it’s that we need it so we can recover, our bodies and brains can recharge. But this isn’t helping to get you to nod off, is it?

For some people looking at what they do and how it affects their sleep can be helpful. I’m not going to lie I know that coffee is . . . well controversial depending on what article you read but really caffeine after a certain time of day, I know, is not going to be good for my sleep or lack thereof.

There’s lots of stuff out there on sleep hygiene, sleep problems or sleep issues etc such as the NHS website that might be of use but (and I know this is easier to type than to do) try to remember that pressuring yourself to go to sleep is possibly not going to be helpful!

Metal Digest is hosting a Mental Health Focus column with Heavy Metal Therapy.

Our goal and aspiration is to post our stories, educate, share resources, encourage our readers to talk about mental health, and most importantly create a community bound with the sounds of heavy metal, so that we are all, less alone.

We will keep the conversation going and we will be sharing interviews, playlists, articles and resources so stay tuned for more!
