There are those bands which take a challenge head on, with each release they get stronger, better themselves and push themselves further and further. One such band are Cryptworm who on the back of a frankly, excellent EP in 2020 have released their debut studio album ‘Spewing Mephitic Putridity’.

With a name like ‘Spewing Mephitic Putridity’, the listener knows what they are in for and that is a barrage of death metal delivered to a nigh on flawless finish. With this album, Cryptworm do not fuck about, they get right in there, chomping down like a zombie at an all you can get buffet in a coma ward. There is everything here that any fan of death metal could ever want, big ass chunky guitars, harsh tremolo picked guitars and jackhammer blastbeating drums coupled with guttural vocals so deep and resonant that they are able to orchestrate a masquerade of the undead. Through eight tracks of utter grimness, Cryptworm batter and bruise the listener over and over again as tracks such as ‘Immense Cerebra Decomposition’, ‘Septic Phlegm Asphyxia’ and ‘Disembowelment (Draped in Gore)’ showing a band with all the raw, wriggling brutality of Undergang, Autopsy and Cerebral Rot.

Simply put, this is a fantastic album of utter mauling by a bunch of rabid dogs that just don’t stop. Clocking in at just under 35 minutes, this is an album which never outstays its welcome. It is an excellent slab of what death metal can offer in 2022 and it will have many fans of the genre placing this high in their list of best death albums of the year.
