Black Metal

The most difficult musical genre to review is classic black metal, especially that of the “true kvlt” variety. How is one to judge a style of music that is not supposed to sound good? Cutting-edge black metal bands like Imperial Triumphant, Blut Aus Nord, or Gaerea all push the boundaries set down by their second-wave predecessors. These elements provide material to examine and critique.

‘Music of the Great Beyond’ by Omhosten provides no such material. This is a canonical black metal album. All of the elements are present. The guitars are tremolo picked. The vocals are indiscernibly shrieked. The production is minimal. The drums are blast beats. The lyrics are about nature and nihilism:

“No one would mind

 Neither bird nor tree

 If mankind perishes utterly

 And spring herself

 When she wakes at dawn

 Would scarcely know

 That we were gone”

This album is everything that a black metal album is supposed to be. If it is being judged by if it did what it’s supposed to do then it should score high. That’s not good enough for a review though. The reason black metal is supposed to have all these aforementioned qualities is that it’s supposed to forgo the excesses, trappings, and frills of other metal to focus purely on the anguish and abjection.  This album did not induce any emotion in me, and I think the culprit is the drums. There’s no expression in the drums. There’s a foundation here. Perhaps if this one-man project can work with a percussionist as his writing partner, future offerings might rise above simply meeting the expectations of black metal codes.

"a good foundation"
