FERNANDHELL. | Think about a 45 old Nick, trapped at home with six cats and one guitar.

Punk/alternative solo artist FERNANDHELL. has just released his brand new single “The Invisible Ones”! The single is taken from FERNANDHELL.’s upcoming EP, which will be released on Sept. 30 via Go Down Records. What awaits you on the new EP? We grabbed the opportunity to have a chat with the artist and find out.

Welcome to Metal Digest. The Normless Music Magazine.

– HEY! GLAD TO BE ON BOARD 🙂

Just a few days left before the release of the album! How is this piece of work different compared to your previous albums?

– WELL, MANY THINGS HONESTLY: IT’S MY FIRST SOLO ALBUM FIRST OF ALL, SO I HAVE ALL

RESPONSIBILITIES FOR ANY GOOD/BAD RESULT OF THE SONGS. SECOND, IT’S MY FIRST ALBUM

AS A SINGER AND GUITAR PLAYER (MAINLY): ALWAYS BEEN A DRUMMER IN MY LIFE, SO I’VE

JUST STARTED EXPERIMENTING LIFE IN THE FRONT ROW…TOTALLY NEW TO ME. BUT FUN.

What are the challenges of being a solo artist in a multidisciplinary industry?

– I DON’T THINK THE INDUSTRY IS EASY IN GENERAL NOWADAYS, BANDS STRUGGLE TOO… THERE ARE TOO MANY THINGS HAPPENING ALL AT ONCE. BUT I’D LIKE TO THINK THAT PEOPLE MIGHT APPRECIATE ALL THE DYI WORK DONE WITH THIS RECORD AND HOW GENUINE IT IS.

Making it as a musician is hard work. Where there days that you felt like quitting? And what kept you going?

– FUNNY ENOUGH, I WENT BACK! I’VE BEEN A CONCERT PROMOTER FOR OVER 25 YEARS AND DURING THOSE YEARS I WASN’T PLAYING THAT MUCH. THEN I QUIT THAT JOB ‘CAUSE I HAD ENOUGH…AND I RESTARTED PLAYING REGULARLY! NOT BEING IN A STRESSFULL POSITION ANYMORE GAVE ME BACK MY PASSION FOR MUSIC AND ENOUGH CREATIVITY TO WRITE NEW STUFF.

In the late 90’s, you began a career as gig promoter. Has this experience changed your perspective as a musician?

– OH YES, DEFINITELY. I STARTED PROMOTING MY BAND’S GIGS AT THE TIME (THE PEAWEES) ‘CAUSE, APART FROM PLAYING DRUMS, THAT WAS THE ONLY THING THAT I COULD DO FINE; THEN IT BECAME A REGULAR DAY JOB, AND I LEARNED OVER TIME THAT BEING A PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN REQUEST A BIG AMOUNT OF CONFIDENCE, PASSION AND DEDICATION. IT’S HARDLY IMAGINABLE THE AMOUNT OF HARD WORK HIDING BEHIND A GREAT CONCERT/PERFORMANCE, BELIEVE ME.

Do you remember what motivated your creativity when you first started out?

– BACK IN THE DAYS IT WAS ME AND MY LIFETIME FRIEND RICCARDO (EX PEAWEES BASS PLAYER) LISTENING TO RECORDS, MAINLY PUNK, AND WRITING A BUNCH OF CRAPPY SONGS.. THAT WAS IT… BUT IT MEANT THE WORLD TO US, REALLY. THEN WE MET HERVE’, AND STARTED THE PEAWEES TOGETHER AND THAT SOUNDED RIGHT: THAT MOTIVATED ME SO MUCH THAT I RECALL THINKING “I COULD DO THIS FOREVER”.

So, tell us about this ‘Gatten Army’. I know you’re dying to tell us all about it and we are dying to hear all about it!

– AH AH! LONG STORY SHORT: WE GOT 6 CATS IN THE HOUSE (MERLINO, MORGANA, SIRIO, TIGRO, MARGOT, PYRO) AND WE USED TO CALL THEM “ARMATA GATTEN” (“GATTEN ARMY”): WHILE WRITING DOWN MY SONGS THEY WERE ALL AROUND ME, PURRING WHEN THE SONG WAS TOUCHING, MEOWING HARD WHEN THE SONG WAS ROCKIN’… AND PUKING WHEN IT WAS NOT. SO THE EP REALLY IS A JOINT VENTURE BETWEEN US! 🙂

Any big plans coming up?

– GOT A COUPLE OF COOL OPENING SLOTS AT THE MOMENT, MUDHONEY IN BOLOGNA IN OCTOBER THE 6TH and NADA SURF IN MILAN IN DECEMBER, WHICH IS GREAT BECAUSE I DO LOVE BOTH ACTS. WOULD LOVE TO PLAY A FEW SHOWS IN EUROPE IN ’23, WE’LL SEE!!

Until we meet again,

Chelf

– MY PLEASURE CHELF, IT’S BEEN FUN! THANK YOU!! FH.\
