Elder, Isis, Mastodon, Neurosis, Intronaut, Gojira, Cult of Luna

In the modern era, there are so many bands who are not content to just sit and play on genre. They find themselves trapped if they are expanding their sound and incorporating genres to get the sound they require. One such band are Irist, who after hitting their stride with their debut album ‘Order of the Mind’ are back with their debut EP ‘Gloria’.
As an EP, ‘Gloria’ does everything that it sets out to do and that is to demonstrate exactly what Irist are capable of in a short time frame. Clocking in with five tracks at just under 22 minutes, this is an EP which never outstays its welcome as Irist continue to meld their post-metal sound with that of down and dirty groove metal as well as crushingly heavy progressive sludge. This means that tracks such as ‘Heal’, ‘Watching Eye’, and the title track have all the hallmarks of the likes of Mastodon, Gojira and Neurosis whilst carrying the post-metal sensibilities from the likes of Cult of Luna, Elder and Isis which is guaranteed to give this EP a large demographical appeal.
‘Gloria’ is an EP that won’t sell stuff by the pallet load, the mainstream audience will give little to zero fucks about it, but within the post-metal world, Irist have delivered a release which will be devoured like a silver ball in a game of ‘Hungry Hungry Hippos’.
"a decent post-metal EP"
