Mathcore/Hardcore/Technical Death Metal
In ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ the feeling of drinking the fabled ‘Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster’ is explained to be like “having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped around a large gold brick.” Clearly, The Callous Daoboys set out to create the sonic equivalent of that feeling, as this album is disorienting, violent, uncomfortable, and unhinged from beginning to end, with little hope of predicting what happens next even after listening to it multiple times. It can probably best be described as what animals as leaders would create if they tried to emulate Cardiacs, using Tom Morello to lyrically emulate Rosetta Stoned whilst on hard drugs, and then sending the entire piece to be recorded by Dillinger Escape Plan. For good measure, there’s even some moments that invoke basic pop-punk like that of Fall Out Boy or Panic! At The Disco. Because of course there is.
The end result is, somehow, an enticing and brilliant album that bears well to repeat listening and showcases immense musical virtuosity from a deeply inventive collective. Just be careful bringing up the lyrics; they might actually fry your brain…
"Not for the faint of heart, but incredible for the initiated"
