Heavy Metal Therapy: What the hell is their problem?!?

Ever noticed that how some acts affect how you act back at them? Have you ever noticed what you’ve decided their behaviour means then affects how you then act towards them? You hang meaning on what they’re doing. They’re quiet because they’re mad at me? Why are they mad at me? What have they got to be mad about? What are they sulking for??? So, you then act a little defensively or maybe even a little offensively and then they’re wondering what’s gotten into you so now the way they’re acting is reinforcing to you that ‘something is wrong/something is up’ and so it goes on.

There’s an interesting social psychology concept called Attribution theory which says that we interpret other people’s behaviours and then we react based on those interpretations. If the interpretation is correct, then we can react appropriately. Unfortunately, though we have other things like how we’re feeling ourselves at the time, our beliefs etc that can affect our interpretation and if we interpret incorrectly then our reaction might be less than useful and may even cause some friction.

So, if you find yourself wondering ‘how did we get here’ or ‘what happened’ it might be useful to look at the interaction but think about what you saw, what you thought and whether those might not be in line with each other. Did you hang meaning on what the other person did because you make assumptions that they’re ‘always sulking’ and not that there were other factors outside their control that you’ve not taken into account? How were you feeling at the time? Sometimes we don’t see that our own feelings affect what we think we’re seeing in others. It’s not to say that any negative interaction has a reason or can be rationalised but if you’re wondering ‘what’s up with them’ then thinking about what you’re hanging on them might be useful.
