Muse; a band who almost need no introduction, being one of the biggest Alternative Rock bands for over 20 years now, backed up by countless stadium and arena tours across the world; are back with another studio album, 5 years on from the, let’s say, mixed reception of previous album ‘Simulation Theory’. It seems like they’ve taken criticism on board a little, as ‘Will of the People focuses somewhat on the heavier end of their new style, with ‘Won’t Stand Down’ and ‘Kill or be Killed’ being as close to actual Metal as Muse have come since ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ and ‘Citizen Erased’ in the early 2000s.

Unfortunately, the strange, electronica/darkwave/pop overtone that haunted ‘Simulation Theory’ is still present, and while there’s nothing wrong with the style (some fantastic bands fall under that moniker), Muse struggle to make it work effectively. ‘You Make Me Feel Like It’s Halloween’ is a quality effort within the more digitized style, but tracks like ‘Compliance’ and ‘Euphoria’ seem flat and uninspiring.

Closing track ‘We Are Fucking Fucked’ is arguably the highlight of the album, sounding like it would fit in and be somewhat of a highlight of 2009’s ‘The Resistance’; and the heavier tracks give hope that the next effort could be something special, but this album doesn’t dispel the feeling in recent years that Muse realistically peaked in 2004, and despite some highlights, haven’t released a consistently great album since ‘Black Holes and Revelations’

"Has its moments, but still far from their best"
