What is a second wave black metal band without controversy? Nobody. That’s who. If you didn’t burn down a church, murder a band mate, rob a petrol station, bum a polar bear or finger the entrails of a dead dog are you REALLY trve kvlt? One band who have been there and done it are Ofermod who have returned in quick succession with their latest studio album ‘Mysterium Iniquitatis’.

Ofermod might be the one-man project of Belfagor, but this bloke doesn’t need anyone else; he’s a quality black metal multi-musicians and he exhibits these qualities with ease here. However, there is also an element of death metal here, it may only be subtle, but it is nuanced just enough to make ‘Mysterium Iniquitatis’ really fucking good. Yeah, sure, nearly 40 years on, we all know what black metal sounds like, and this album sounds like that and that means that fans of Ofermod will be enamoured, but it’ll also drag in those fans which may not be familiar which is arguably one of the most forgotten black metal bands from that period having all the appeal of Ondskapt, Watain, Malign and Funeral Mist.

With ‘Mysterium Iniquitatis’, Ofermod don’t just stick to their guns, they fucking go for it and therefore, the listener gets a superb album delivered with all the trve kvlt passion they could ever want.

"a superb album of black metal"
