Voivod are one of the most underrated, overlooked and influential progressive thrash metal bands on the planet. From their debut album, the band have taken in elements of the hardcore, thrash, progressive metal and industrial and the French Canadians have become masters of their craft. This year has Noise Records releasing a ‘Forgotten in Space – The Noise Records Years’, a box set of those early influential Voivod releases.

As far as box sets go, ‘Forgotten in Space…’ is what can only be described ‘the dogs bollocks’. For those unfamiliar with that expression, this is a superb box set of five remastered CDs and one DVD. What the purchaser will get here are three excellent Voivod albums ‘Rrröööaaarrr’, ‘Killing Technology’, ‘Dimension Hatröss’, the latter two are among some of the best heavy metal albums ever released. Those records are worth it alone, but what the purchaser will get here with ‘Forgotten in Space…’ are the demo tracks from the ‘Dimension Hatröss’ sessions where the listener will get to see these tracks in their primal form and the steps which Voivod took in creating a masterpiece. Furthermore, the purchaser will get even more primal Voivod will get also get the ‘No Speed Limit Weekend ‘86’ live release. If that isn’t enough, then the ‘Chaosmongers’ DVD includes all sorts of interviews, live performances and previously unreleased footage from 1985 and 1988. Those of the vinyl persuasion will also get the opportunity to get ‘Rrröööaaarrr’ on red and black splatter, ‘Killing Technology’ on green and purple swirl, ‘Dimension Hatröss’ on a grey and red swirl vinyl. Moreover, ‘‘Dimension Hatröss – the Demos’ and ‘No Speed Limit…’ will be available on vinyl for the first time, the former with a blue and white splatter, the latter with green and black splatter.

This is an excellent box set for the avid Voivod fan, it is a perfect collection of the Noise Records years and anyone looking to get into this legendary band or looking to bolster their collection should splurge some cash on this.
