There is no more famous band from Texas than ZZ Top, the tres hombres with the dos beards and that Texan blues shuffle who could switch it up to hard rock in an instant. Back in 2019, Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard went back to basics; locking themselves in a room, they recorded a Netflix special called ‘That Little Ol’ Band from Texas’ and this year has ZZ Top releasing this soundtrack in the shape of ‘Raw (That Little Ol’ Band from Texas) Original Soundtrack’.

What ‘Raw…’ shows that when it comes to low-down dirty blues, washed down with whisky and a massive cigar, nobody does it better than ZZ Top. Focusing primarily on their 70’s career, ‘Raw…’ reminds us that ZZ Top are not only tighter than ducks’ arse, but nobody else sounds like ZZ Top. From Gibbons’ southern drawl through to Hill’s soulful Elvis Presley croon, tracks such as ‘Brown Sugar’, ‘Just Got Paid’ and ‘Certified Blues’ are traded off against the likes of ‘I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide’, ‘La Grange’ and ‘Tush’ coupled with an obligatory performance of ‘Legs’ and ‘Gimme All Your Lovin’’ with even a bluesy laid-back version of ‘Thunderbird’ getting an airing.

ZZ Top have delivered a live album which shows them at their most, well…. raw. This is a release which makes the listener crank up the volume, sit back and relax with a six-pack of beer and a bottle of sour-mash whisky. So grab your cheap sunglasses, your blue jeans covered in oil and gasoline, your fluffy guitars, turn up the volume and send Dusty Hill off in style with ‘Raw…’.
