Hard Rock/Heavy Metal
UFO have found themselves in the vanguard of hard rock and heavy metal throughout the 70s and 80s with their raw sound which saw the band have the dangerous swagger of sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. This year has HNE Recordings reissuing UFO’s 1992 album ‘High Stakes & Dangerous Men’ coupled with their following 1992 live album ‘Lights Out in Tokyo’.
Following a floundering in the late 80’s, ‘High Stakes…’ saw UFO getting themselves sorted and beginning to lay down the paths which would see the band reclaim their throne. It saw Pete Way return to the fold after an absence of 10 years and is also the only UFO album to feature former Wild Horses members Laurence Archer and Clive Edwards. However, this is a straight up reissue, there are no bonus tracks or extras here for ‘High Stakes…’ and the ‘Lights Out…’ is a decent live album which shows that when it comes to live performances, UFO could still get out there and tear it up in a way which was always vastly superior to their studio counterparts.
It is good to have ‘High Stakes…’ readily available again because it gives many UFO completionists the chance to get hold of an album which has been out of print whilst those whose love for rock music has been rekindled in the last 15 years after waning in the early 80’s will find another album from one of their favourite bands to get stuck into. It isn’t massively glamorous, and it is very of its time, but still shows UFO sticking to their guns and doing what they do best.
