“Grandfather… tell me a story… I want to hear the one about the kings of metal, but not that story… the one about their final battles”. What was once a triumphant battle cry from Manowar has turned into something of an occasional shout these days and now the self-proclaimed kings of metal are back with their latest EP ‘Highlights from the Revenge of Odysseus’.

As an EP, ‘Highlights…’ is a little bit of a head scratcher. This is five tracks clocking in at under 15 minutes, so far, so good. Yet, two of these tracks clock in at under a minute, so three tracks… feeling cheated yet? Gone is the chest beating machismo of the 80’s and 90’s, there are no pleasure slaves, swords wet like young girls in their prime or speakers exploding here. This is basically two tracks, one track ‘Where Eagles Fly’, a duet with the powerful voice of Chiara Tricarico of Moonlight Haze picking up all the slack whilst ‘Immortal’ with Eric Adams realistically limps for six and half minutes. The rest of the EP is made up from spoken words that are only really made listenable through Sakis Tolis and Kostas Kazakos’ deliveries.

Does this EP make the listener want to don their helmet, breastplate, shield and grab their hoplite spear? Does it make them want to defend Ithaca with all their might? The answer is no. This is a piss-poor EP and if you see wimps and posers wearing crackerjack clothes… it is no bloody wonder. This is literally for completionists only.

"a poor EP wearing crackerjack clothes"
