Ever get that feeling? You know, the more you smoke, the heavier the hands, feet and head get, like the feeling of dragging a lead weight around with you? That’s how heavy ‘III’ is, the imaginatively titled third album from Sweden’s 10,000 Years.
Thankfully, crap album title name aside, 10,000 Years have delivered a heavy slice of stoner metal which cranks up the bass, gives it some guitar feedback and takes the journey on haze ridden journey through the Scandinavian tundra with nothing above us but the stars and the Northern Lights in the sky. Through its crushing riffs and drums to its nebulous guitars and coarse vocals, ‘III’ is a sci-fi time travelling adventure into primordial lands as shorter tracks like ‘Cult Axe’, ‘Megafauna’ and ‘The Green King Rises’ bring all the power of High On Fire, The Sword and Corrosion of Conformity with a sound which worships at the Matt Pike and Pepper Keenan altar. For those who like their sound a little more ‘out-there’, then ‘III’ closes with two colossal sci-fi beasts back-to-back in the shape of ‘To Suns Beyond’ and ‘Escape From Earth’ which would massively appeal to fans of Nebula, Fu Manchu and of course, the masters themselves, Sleep with their long drawn out stoned bass passages.
‘III’ continues 10,000 Years’ odyssey into the heart of the universe and if you’re looking to give your speakers a good work out whilst you skin up, then this album is a damned good shout.
