It very nearly happened for Civil War, just when they were on the cusp of greatness in 2016, vocalist Nils Patrik Johansson upped sticks and left the band. For Civil War, it was back to the trenches as they planned their next offensive and now, nearly seven years on from ‘The Last Full Measure’, Civil War have new vocalist Kelly Sundown Carpenter now bedded and go over the top once again with their fourth studio album ‘Invaders’.

Following the exit of guitarist Rikard Sundén in 2021, Thobbe Englund another ex-Sabaton guitarist has stepped up to the plate to replace him. This change, coupled with the vocal change has understandably brought a dynamic change to ‘Invaders’. This album is less of a Sabaton clone and now a fully fledged power metal band on its own accord now. Yes, the historical themes are still here, but it would appear they take second place to the music now which brings in large swathes of classic heavy metal to temper that power metal edge as tracks such as ‘Oblivion’, ‘Custer’s Last Stand’ and ‘Heart of Darkness’ now lean on a sound which would appeal to fans of Symphony X as well as early Bloodbound and Astral Doors.

Granted the cheese factor is now much lower than the previous albums, but ‘Invaders’ now has a maturity about it, and this means that Civil War have released quite possibly the album of their career. ‘Invaders’ opens a brand-new chapter in the history of the Civil War and judging by this, it’s going to be a good one.

"‘Invaders’ opens but a brand-new chapter in the history of the Civil War and judging by this, it’s going to be a good one"
