About Rod Rodrigues

Welcome to Metal Digest’s ABOUT. column

Please introduce the band in the most spontaneous way.

This is Rod Rodrigues, I’m a guitar player and music teacher, and recently released a new EP “Tales of a Changing Life Part.1”. If you like progressive rock and metal, I’m sure you’ll like i

What’s something an outsider wouldn’t know about your band?

I’m a Brazilian/Canadian guitar player influenced by all those instrumental guitar players, such as Steve Vai, Andy Timmons, John Petrucci and Greg Howe, but I also love soundtracks, classical music and fusion. My music is a kind of mix of all of that.

What’s the career highlight you’re most proud of?

My latest release “Tales of a Changing Life Part.1”. I’m very proud of it and it ended up exactly how I wanted. It took me a long time to release a new solo album/EP, but I think it was the right time to do it.

Lyrics that stuck with you?

I write instrumental music, so I can’t talk about my own LoL… From other artists, I love the lyrics of Spirit Carries On by Dream Theater.

What’s the phone app you use most?

Youtube, Facebook and Instagram. And I love to play Sin City on my phone, I have been playing it for years.

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?

Working out at the Gym or playing video games.

Are you more of a “play music to live” or a “live to play music” type of person?

This is a really hard question because I’m a full time musician. I teach 5 days a week and have gigs on weekends. I think I could say both, because I play music to live, to pay my bills, but I live to play music, I can’t live without it.

How would your 10-year-old self-react to what you do now?

You were supposed to be an engineer, what are you doing playing guitar? Lol

What career advice would you give to young musicians in the rock and metal industry?

You don’t have a career with only one record, that’s just the beginning. I thought l had a career as a solo artist when I released my first EP in 2010, and I got very frustrated because I didn’t get the results that I wanted. Because of that frustration I took so long to get back to my solo project again. But now I know I was wrong. We have to take baby steps and never give up.

If you could do it all over again, would you pursue the same career in music?

Absolutely yes! I wouldn’t take 10 years to release a second EP and I wouldn’t bother very much with bands.
