Groove Metal/Metalcore

It is a well-known heavy metal fact, stick the word core on the end of anything and it is guaranteed to send a bunch of old-school metalheads reeling in an unbridled rage. In the last 20 years, the UK has done a great job of melding most genres with metalcore and this year has Malevolence returning with their third studio album ‘Malicious Intent’ to deliver another punch of groove laden metalcore.

By now, we’re used to the Malevolence sound, this is a band a band comfortable with who they are and their identity in the heavy metal world. In fact, they’re going to stand on the pedestal and shout all about it as they continue to meld deep southern fried grooving riffs with staccato drumming and tasty breakdowns whilst vocalist Alex Taylor prowls the album with ferocious barks and guttural snarls. There is something wish quite ‘un-British’ about Malevolence and ‘Malicious Intent’ feels like it should be crawling out the of Mississippi delta of New Orleans than the steel city of Sheffield as tracks such as ‘Life Sentence’, ‘Armageddon’ and ‘On Broken Glass’ roar with all the power of Pantera, Lamb of God and Shadows Fall whilst ‘Karma’ wouldn’t be out of place on any Down album.

For those who have never heard Malevolence, then ‘Malicious Intent’ is a good place to start before delving into the remainder of their discography. Yeah sure, there isn’t anything here that breaks any moulds, but it is a solid album of grooving metalcore that can start a pit anywhere that sounds great on the stereo or live venue.
