Driving their way out of Australia, Hellz Abyss have been blending heavy metal with alternative and hard rock in a way that would appeal to fans of In This Moment, Halestorm and Garbage and now, the band have released their latest party inspired offering ‘Blow’.
Hellz Abyss are a band that should not be underestimated, led by the screaming Venomous Hellz (aka Lisa Perry) with her six-octave vocal range, the band are getting some real followings and success on both social media platforms and stages alike. For Hellz Abyss, ‘Blow’ is an album to be proud of, these 13 tracks are not stereotypical, it has a unique sound that is both moody and strong and even boasts a rip-roaring appearance from former Rob Zombie guitarist Mike Riggs for a solo during ‘Cover and Run’. When this is combined with white hot engaging solos and melodic hooks from both guitars and vocals, it manages to provide the band with a whole lot of attitude that is delivered through skill and grit. To achieve this, ‘Blow’ fuses nu-metal, electro industrial and hard rock into an enjoyable mix where every emotion is felt from the slow and haunting melodies to the rattling riffs throughout. It may be slow to start with ‘Grettle’, but this is just blow warming up; ‘Smegma’ drags the listener awake whilst ‘Wanna Play’ is easily one of the best tracks which Hellz Abyss have written, but there is just something which lacks a little power, it is a jab rather than a knockout punch and the drums are a little quiet, they are static and fixed with no fancy stick tricks to be heard.
‘Blow’ shows the potential within Hellz Abyss and whilst it may not ‘blow’ the listener away, there is a talent, grit and determination that shows that the best way to hear the tracks on ‘Blow’ is in the live arena.
