About Blood of Indigo

How do get to know someone? You can stalk their socials but if you want to bypass small talk and get to know your favorite bands and artists beyond the surface level, this is the place to be. Sometimes the oddball questions allow you to learn the most interesting things about a person and see the varied, unique, and special qualities of a creative mind. Shall we?

Welcome to Metal Digest’s ABOUT. column

Please introduce the band in the most spontaneous way.

We are Toronto, Canada’s Dark Fantasy Metal band, Blood of Indigo. I’m Alex Centorame – the lead vocalist/lyricist and I love storytelling. Mariusz Syposz is our master shred guitarist and he loves pedals, and Nathan Gross is our grandiose orchestrator and he loves cats.

What’s something an outsider wouldn’t know about your band?

An outsider probably wouldn’t know that we are a concept band. That means all of our albums are based on a fictional universe that we’ve created through our music and soon to be other forms of storytelling (graphic novels and audiobooks)

What’s the career highlight you’re most proud of?

Our proudest accomplishment is completing our debut album, Dawn of The Shaded World. It took us 5 years to perfect it. We wanted it to sound, look, and feel exactly the way we envisioned it when we began this project. I can proudly say, we’ve been able to achieve that.

Lyrics that stuck with you?

The lyrics from the title track, Dawn of The Shaded World always bring a tear to my eye. I wrote them the day my dog passed away. We collaborated with Lindsay Schoolcraft on this song and whenever I listen to it, it reminds me of the day that I said goodbye to my best friend. The lyrics of this song were dedicated to Tessa (my dog) and for anyone who is going through the pain of losing a friend.

What’s the phone app you use most?

Mostly Facebook Messenger. That’s how I keep in close contact with so many of our fans.

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?

I’ll either go for a long walk and talk to some friends on the phone, pick up a new video game and start a new Dark Souls adventure, or I’ll head to the dojo and practice my kata in Shotokan Karate. I just started karate lessons about a month ago and earned the first two stripes on my white belt the other day. I was so proud of myself. I can’t wait to earn my yellow belt next.

Are you more of a “play music to live” or a “live to play music” type of person?

I’m a live to play music type of person. When I saw Slipknot play in Toronto for the second time in 2016, that was when I knew that THIS was what I wanted to do with my life. I wrote down the words: “I will play Wacken Open Air in 5 years” on a paper towel with a sharpie marker (because I had no printing paper) and I’ve kept it in my wallet since. A couple of months later, Blood of Indigo was born. I can’t wait until that day comes, regardless of the timeline. I love this so much.

How would your 10-year-old self-react to what you do now?

10-year old Alex would be SO happy. I feel like my inner child is very much part of the creative process when it comes to the vision of Blood of Indigo. I’ve even named one of the characters in the story (which you’ll find out more about in our second album) after a character I created when I was a child playing in the school yard with my friends. This is a dream come true for him.

What career advice would you give to young musicians in the rock and metal industry?

Be 100% authentic in everything that you create, do everything with excellence, and treat people you work with the way you want to be treated. Our fans are our friends and we treat them as such. The same goes for everyone we work with behind the scenes. We are genuinely grateful for everything they’ve done for us. I ask that we carry on the values of respect, integrity, passion, and excellence in Metal for generations to come.

If you could do it all over again, would you pursue the same career in music?

Absolutely. I’d live this journey 100 times over because it has been the most fulfilling experience of my life. I met two of my best friends, we made our dream album together, and we get to share that love with the entire world. There’s nothing quite like it.
