Black It Out: prank calls at 3 am

We got to ask Black it out a few questions on the go.

Welcome to Metal Digest!

Please describe the band in a single sentence.

We’re a mix of Pop-Punk, Easycore, Post-Hardcore, and Emo.

What’s your latest project, and what are you working on right now?

We recently released “Live, Love, Love,” featuring Anndy Negative. It sums up our sound perfectly. Check it out on Spotify! We’re working on re-recording two tracks off our comeback album, Resurgence. We won’t tell you what two, but we’re doing it! We got one new one coming too!

How do you want people to feel when they listen to your music?

It depends on whether the track is supposed to be funny, like “Live, Laugh, Love” featuring Anndy Negative, or serious, like in “Reflections” featuring Promise Game. If it’s funny, we want people to laugh and feel enjoyment with us poking fun at the subject. We want our listeners to empathize with the subject matter for our serious tunes.

Major influences: Who put you on this path?

Bryan’s dad was into music and played the drums and guitar. My (Shaun) dad played guitar and sang, and my mom played bass. So, both Bryan and I were exposed to rock bands at a young age. It was natural for Bryan and me to start playing the guitar and want to be in bands. Bryan got into Metallica at a young age, and I got into The Misfits, Green Day, and The Offspring early on. In grade school, I also had music classes that taught me how to read music, so it was fated for me. I went to college for music.

If you had to flee the country as a band, where would you choose to live?

I don’t know, probably someplace with universal health care and less divided politics. It’s bizarre in the United States right now.

What’s the ‘wow factor’ that makes YOU decide which songs to keep, record and release?

If the song gets stuck in our heads, we keep it. It goes into the ‘needs work’ pile if it doesn’t. We get a feeling when we write a good song. We just kind of know. It’s hard to describe. The easiest way to describe it is that all parts must be memorable.

What’s the most hilarious band memory you can think of?

When Bryan and I would prank call people late at night during our downtime during recording sessions. We’d prank call my mom at 3 AM, and she’d pick up. My mom would stay on the line and play along! It was weird. At the time, we didn’t know if she knew it was us. But, later down the line, my mom let me know she knew. So, that was a bit of a bummer. Of course, she knew; mothers always know!

What would be the title of the band’s biography?

Waiting for Bryan: The Black It Out Story

What’s the next milestone you’d like to achieve as a band?

We’d love to be featured in more articles. It’d be awesome if we were featured in articles without us reaching out. We’d love to have a cult following. We appreciate the people who listen to us now! Thank you!

Until we meet again,

Chelf
