Some bands just hit the ground running, they know exactly what they want to do and how to do it. One such band are DeVicious, as the Germans delivered two warmly received albums in the shape of ‘Never Say Never’ in 2018 and ‘Reflections’ the following year. This year has DeVicious returning for the first time since 2020’s ‘Phase Three’ with their latest album ‘Black Heart’.
As far as ‘Black Heart’ goes, there is nothing here that any fan of DeVicious will not have heard before. But DeVicious delivers another album of strong anthemic songs which do exactly what they are designed to do and that is to create feel good party songs that get the listener in the mood for damned good boogie. Tracks such as ‘Afterlife’, ‘After Midnight’ and the title track really show that even though DeVicious have been very busy as of late, their creative well is certainly still bubbling having all the enjoyability of Santa Cruz and Reckless Love as well H.E.A.T. and Crazy Lixx. Furthermore, the track ‘Liar’ is superb and stands tall as the best track on the album.
For an album, ‘Black Heart’ does what it needs to do, when its good, it is really good; but there are times where this album meanders, but all in all, this is a decent album of decent tracks that does exactly what it needs to do without ever compromising itself.
