“The Necronomicon… an ancient Sumerian text… “blah blah blah, fans of ‘Evil Dead’ will know this completely and now you’re saying it out loud, aren’t you? Sumeria has been a breeding ground for heavy metal for years, its a mysterious place in the Mesopotamian cradle of civilisation which has provided endless influence. One band who take this in their stride are Sijjin who have released their highly anticipated debut album ‘Sumerian Promises’.

If the bands demo was something to get excited about, then ‘Sumerian Promises’ mean that the listener can get their pen and paper out and write home about it because this album is superb. This is a huge slab of old-school thrashing death metal which really shows that these Germans have their head screwed on right as thrashing guitars, pummelling drums and guttural growls during tracks have the appeal of bands such as Possessed as well as early Morbid Angel and Death whilst also having the European power of Vader and early Pestilence with a keen eye also on those early Sepultura albums.

Sadly, this is an album which will not get any of the accolades it so sorely deserves because it is a superb piece of thrashing death metal that will go well underneath the radar. If you are a fan of this genre and you’re looking for something with some real old-school passion and integrity, then ‘Sumerian Promises’ is a dead cert to purchase.
