The Teutonic thrash scene has always been a little more aggressive and primal than its transatlantic counterparts and although the North American scene has ultimately seen massive commercial success, the German scene managed to keep a lot of its dignity intact. One band who have navigated the waves of popularity and decline are Destruction as the thrash metal titans release their latest album ‘Diabolical’.

With a Destruction album, you know its going to blow up the house and leave nothing but rubble in its wake, it’s always a question of just how much house is still remaining at the end of the album. ‘Diabolical’ is a fine album to begin raining down fire and brimstone and from the off Schmier and co bring the aggression to the forefront. Tracks such as ‘No Faith in Humanity’, ‘State of Apathy’ and ‘Whoreification’ are fantastic examples of what Destruction are capable of in the modern era with an album of brutal powerful tracks and let’s face it, in the last two years, there’s been a lot to be pissed off about. Yet, ‘Diabolical’ suffers from a lack of dynamics, the production is quite bass heavy and whilst this is good for mining in your chest cavity, the real lack of treble takes away some of the prowess and in all honesty, really holds ‘Diabolical’ back.

This doesn’t mean that ‘Diabolical’ is naff, in fact far from it, this is actually an excellent album, many of these tracks are very memorable and very, very enjoyable with Destruction delivering exactly what Destruction promise and you can’t really beat that.

"delivers everything Destruction promised"
