If Iron Maiden are ‘Maiden England’, then Night Demon are certainly ‘Maiden California’ as the trad metal band have done their best in the last decade to invoke the spirit of NWOBHM and in particular those early Iron Maiden albums to become one of the best at what they do. It may have been five years since Night Demon last released a studio album, but this year has the Californians returning with a compilation album, ‘Year of the Demon’.

In lieu of a studio album, which is well overdue by the way, this compilation offers the listener a chance to get their hands on the singles; ‘Empires Fall’, ‘Kill the Pain’, ‘Are You Out There’ and ‘Vysteria’ from 2020 which were originally exclusively released on 7” vinyl. Thankfully, these are now available on CD and digital for the first time. Furthermore, alongside this, the listener also gets the B-sides from these singles with some decent covers of ‘The Sun Goes Down’ by Thin Lizzy and ‘100 MPH’ by the mighty Cirith Ungol as well as live versions of ‘Wasted Years’ by Iron Maiden and ‘In Trance’ and ‘Top of the Bill’ by Scorpions, both of which feature Uli Jon Roth on guitar.

‘Year of the Demon’ is very good at what it does. It is actually great to have access some decent singles which were unavailable to those without a turntable. These tracks aren’t going to set the world alight, but what they do is provide a nice snack to munch on whilst we wait for our dinner of a next studio album.
