Heavy Metal Therapy: Bias and a bit of Headbanging

You’re annoyed today. You can be annoyed, that’s allowed.

It’s a valid emotion and for most people, it just means you’re reacting to a sh*tty event. What’s the outcome though? Do you sit with this anger and get angrier and angrier and stew on all the other crap that’s also happened this week, so you get to a point where you’re so angry you’re almost paralysed by it? Or do you do something? But what can you do? Well . . .  you could go for a run because as we all know exercise is good for you but the thought right now of getting into gym gear might make you both angry and miserable!

There has to be a release for this or else it’s just percolate for days, and it might be spread to others. You might snap or get angry with them and then they’re react, and that reaction will just compound your current view that the world is being sh*tty to you.

When we’re in a mood we look for things that support that mood/thought and ignore the other stuff that’s evidence to the contrary.

Right now, you might be annoyed that today’s plans got canceled and so today is rubbish and everything sucks. This is a lovely trick our brains pull on us called bias.

But you’d ignoring or not focusing on the fact that that last time/last week the plans did not get cancelled as they don’t fit with the current emotional optics.

Ok so what’s to be done? Well for starters looking at this in a non-biased way might be useful as then it’s not all one sided and then for the anger that’s maybe still percolating there’s the wonderful remedy that is that favourite tune which is an angry song but somehow deflates you. You could headbang as this does count as exercise and doesn’t require a change of clothes!
