Cast your mind back to ‘Doomsday for the Deceiver’, the 1986 debut album from Flotsam & Jetsam. Now, cast your mind back even further where many of us had never even heard of the band as the Phoenix thrashers did their best to fight their way into the thrash scene with their 1985 demo tapes ‘Iron Tears’ and ‘Metal Shock’. This year has Vic Records reissuing those first two tapes for consumption once more onto one release.

These demo tracks aren’t exactly hidden away, they’ve been previously released on reissues of ‘Doomsday…’ before. However, unlike those releases, what the listener gets here are not only the two demos in one package, but now what is available are live tracks. Live versions of ‘Iron Tears’ from 1984 and ‘She Took an Axe’ from 1985 alongside a home demo of ‘Hammerhead’ recorded at Jason Newsted’s place. Furthermore, as an added incentive here, Flotsam & Jetsam also deliver a 16-page booklet, full of rare pictures all assembled with notes from Kelly Smith allowing the purchaser to hopefully see something that they may not have seen before.

But, if you’re the sort of person who already owns these tracks as bonus tracks on ‘Doomsday…’, then maybe this isn’t really worth it. However, for those massive collectors of Flotsam & Jetsam, then ‘Iron Tears/Metal Shock’ really is a great way to dig into the past of Flotsam & Jetsam.
