How do get to know someone? You can stalk their socials but if you want to bypass small talk and get to know your favorite bands and artists beyond the surface level, this is the place to be.Sometimes the oddball questions allow you to learn the most interesting things about a person and see the varied, unique, and special qualities of a creative mind. Shall we?
Welcome to Metal Digest’s ABOUT. column
Please introduce the band in the most spontaneous way. Yo! This is Nick AKA Signal Collapse! The guy trying to write beautiful atmospheric choruses on 8-string guitars.
What’s something an outsider wouldn’t know about your band? Most of the lead guitar on the album is played on 2000s era Ibanez JEM. I’m a huge Steve Vai fan.
What’s the career highlight you’re most proud of? Outside of writing for Metal Digest? It’s still pretty early for Signal Collapse, but James Monteith (TesseracT) listened to “On My Shoulders” on his Twitch stream. He contended “it djents.” When one of the djent gods says it djents, it djents.
Lyrics that stuck with you? “Of calm and quiet walls, I drew her close, Of triangles and bleeding wrists, I drew her close.” – The Stinging Rain, Misery Signals
What’s the phone app you use most? Probably Reddit!
What’s your favorite way to spend a day off? Sitting in front of my computer with my guitar, or jamming with friends.
Are you more of a “play music to live” or a “live to play music” type of person? Definitely “play music to live.” Couldn’t live without it.
How would your 10-year-old self-react to what you do now? He would probably expect me to be headlining a tour right now, but I think he’d love the music I’m making.
What career advice would you give to young musicians in the rock and metal industry? Believe in your music. How can anyone else get behind you if you don’t think your stuff is good? Don’t let self-esteem get in the way of being great.
If you could do it all over again, would you pursue the same career in music? I would honestly spend even more time focused on music. But absolutely, I can (and will) do this again and again.
