Remember when FC Barcelona were so good because they built their entire team around Lionel Messi? Well, when you do this in music, it gets equally good results. SheWolf is a band entirely constructed around vocalist Angel Wolf-Black as the Nameless Ghouls of the lupine world step forward with their eponymously titled debut album.
What SheWolf deliver here with this debut album is an album of solid heavy metal which although leans heavily on power metal, it also takes in elements of both folk and symphonic metal. Yet, this isn’t your typical ‘Euro female fronted band’, wailing away in a snow filled landscape, this is a band which invoke the power of Freja and the spirit of Boudicca with tracks such as ‘Moonbound’, ‘Welcome to the Pack’ and ‘Nothing is Forever’ which have all the melodic goodness of Rust n’ Rage, Shield of Wings and Glasya as Angel Wolf-Black delivers track after track of beautiful accessible songs.
There may be a little bit of gimmick here with the costumes and ‘unnamed wolves’, but dig beneath this and the listener will find some great tracks which show a band with some real potential underneath their feet. ‘SheWolf’ may not be quite thrashing Manchester United in a Champions League final, but it is certainly getting there.
