In modern heavy and alternative metal circles, Josh Rand is a well-known name. Famous for his work Stone Sour, who since Corey Taylor put the band on hold in 2020, has been expanding his horizons with The L.I.F.E. Project, his latest venture with Paralandra vocalist Casandra Carson with the band releasing their latest EP ‘Big F.O.U.R.’.
Stone Sour have never shied away from delivering cover versions and they’re actually usually good; it should come as no surprise then that with an EP titled ‘Big F.O.U.R.’, that The L.I.F.E. Project have chosen to cover tracks from Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica and Anthrax. What’s that? The sound of a bunch of elitists suddenly getting angry? Yes of course it is, how dare the bloke from Stone Sour do this… and with a WOMAN! Rage intensifies. Yeah, well fuck off. ‘Big F.O.U.R.’ does exactly what it is needs to do, it is The L.I.F.E. Project having fun and delivering four very good, faithful to the original covers. Furthermore, the vocals of Carson do manage to give a new dynamic to many of these tracks, particularly ‘Caught in A Mosh’ and ‘One’.
When it boils down to it, ‘Big F.O.U.R.’ is what it is, it is a covers EP. Yes, there it is wonderfully produced, excellently delivered and a bit of fun, but it would have been nice to have another EP of original material.
"wonderfully delivered EP of thrash covers"
