Emperor – ‘IX Equilibrium’

Candlelight/Century Media Records
Genre
Symphonic Black Metal

This afternoon in the Metal Digest office we’re getting out our orchestra and corpse paint because we’re getting our black metal on by blasting ‘XI Equilibrium’, the 1999 album from Emperor. With this album, Emperor rounded off the 90’s with a bang with many fans believing that ‘IX Equilibrium’ provides the last throw of the black metal dice as the genre waned in popularity. However, as an album, ‘IX Equilibrium’ may not be the best, but its symphonic elements certainly encouraged rising bands such as Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth to experiment with their sound further. So this afternoon, dig out your copy of ‘IX Equilibrium’, your leathers, spikes and corpse paint because if you’re going to play this, you might as well go all in.
