Circus of Fools, Finntroll, Korpiklaani, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius,
Tunic. Check. Hose. Check. Lute. Check. Codpiece? Erm… check. Right, are we ready to go? No, we’re not going to a re-enactment of the Aachen court of the Holy Roman Empire. We are getting ready to listen to ‘Blutbann’, the latest album from Harpyie.
Harpyie only released an album last year and the pandemic seems to have given the band a huge creative boost. ‘Blutbann’ shows that Harpyie haven’t lost any of their bite or even had any of their creative wells dry up. This isn’t your usual hey nonny nonny folk/metal or your Finnish drinking songs with a fiddle and accordion, Harpyie treat us to another dose of heavy riffage that toes the line between the sing-along anthems of power metal and the raw guttural touches of black metal. At its most light, tracks such ‘Nachtfalter’, ‘Blutadler’ and ‘Okkult’ have all the fluttering, uplifting nature of Sonata Arctica and Stratovarius whilst at its most raw, there is all the dark and twisty nature of Finntroll, Korpiklaani and even Circus of Fools which therefore allows ‘Blutbann’ to have a wide-ranging appeal.
There is a lot to take in immediately with ‘Blutbann’, it may only be just under 50 minutes, but there is a lot to explore in that time which allows the listen to play it over and over again without ever feeling tired or bored. But is it anything majorly spectacular? The answer, no. However, it is very enjoyable, and you can’t ask for more than that.
"a lot to take in, but it is enjoyable"
