At this point in their career, even the average passing metal fan has at least heard of Napalm Death and the influential British death metal/grindcore band have got reputation around the world. A couple of years ago, Napalm Death released the excellent ‘Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism’ which reached the top echelons of the best metal albums of 2020 and now, Napalm Death are back with their latest EP, ‘Resentment is Always Seismic – a Final Throw of Throes’.

If you were to open a dictionary and leaf through until you find the word ‘stopgap’, there will be a picture of ‘Resentment…’. This is an EP of leftover and cover tracks which, although very good, had these tracks been added to ‘Throes…’ it would have made the album far too long and sullied it and Napalm Death did the correct thing leaving them off. However, it is good these tracks are readily available, they are decent with ‘Narcissus’ and ‘Resentment Always Simmers’ being as good as anything Napalm Death have released recently. Yet, the cover versions here do seem a little pointless, yes, they are delivered well but do we really need a Slab! and Bad Brains cover? Probably not in all honesty. Furthermore, this is exemplified by the Dark Sky Burial industrial dark rock sound of the closing track. Shane Embury is very good at what he does in Dark Sky Burial, but do we need it combined with Napalm Death? No and it does whiff a little bit of: “hey, I have another project you may like, here’s a sample”.

There are a few tracks here that will undoubtedly make their way into a lot of playlists and would sound great in the live environment. But to run out and purchase this EP? Probably just for Napalm Death enthusiasts only.

"an EP of enjoyable tracks, but a physical purchase is probably best reserved for hardcore Napalm Death fans"
