This morning in the Metal Digest office we are blasting a real classic heavyweight by turning the volume up on the self-titled album by Black Sabbath. Ominous person on the cover, inverted cross in the inlay and songs about Satan and the occult coupled with big, fat, blues driven riffs began what arguably people now refer to as the year dot in the creation of heavy metal. ‘Black Sabbath’ was the culmination of a talented blues guitarist and bassist, a jazz drummer with all the flair of Buddy Rich and a monotonous wailing vocalist who could just about keep a tune. On paper, it shouldn’t work, but in practise, it set a fire slowly burning that would change the very landscape of heavy rock as we know it.
