Sweet Crystal | Still Reaching The World, One Song At A Time

Progressive, powerful and passionate:
the music of SWEET CRYSTAL is universal in its appeal and eternal in its message.

The musicians that make up SWEET CRYSTAL – Marq Andrew Speck on lead vocals and keys, Bill Blatter on guitars and vocals, Steve Wieser on drums and newest member of the band Martin Kuchar on bass  – are on the front line of Christian rock music, holding high the message of the cross.
Welcome to the world of 5 Carat Rock:  sweet, very sweet indeed!

Welcome to Metal Digest!

• Please describe the band in a single sentence.

Our trademarked slogan – Reaching The World, One Song At A Time™ – pretty much says it all about our music,
message, mission and ministry: we are here to reach out to a world with songs of hope and inspiration that rock!

• What’s your latest project and what are you working on right now?

Our new release ‘7TH HEAVEN is our 7 song, 7th release (thus the name), and is our most powerful and
passionate to date – which is saying a lot. ‘7TH HEAVEN” starts bold out of the gate. Not only 5 songs written by
the band but we also cover a ‘70s song by Christian alt rockers The Call and even reach back even farther to the
glory days of the 60’s Detroit music scene by ‘Crystalizing’ a classic SRC rock tune. How’s that for diversity in
music? This release features 4 singles that came out over the last 2 ‘pandemic’ year…even though we couldn’t get
out and play live, we streamed a variety of shows from our studio and put out these 4 songs to keep us in the
minds and ears of our fans, friends and family.

• How do you want people to feel when they listen to your music?

We hope that the music, message and words we sing will make a difference in the lives of everyone who hears
them. Our music is about us, but it’s also about you. We hope someone who hears our music – or attends a
Sweet Crystal show – to come away feeling better about themselves, knowing that whatever they are dealing
with, chances are we’ve dealt with it as well. As the main lyricist for Sweet Crystal, I feel if the song doesn’t speak
to me as I sing it, it won’t speak to anyone else so I make sure what I write is inspired by my faith and presented
as sincerely as I can.

• Major influences: Who put you on this path?

We started out totally influenced by the progressive rock English music scene of the 60’s and 70’s: bands like Pink
Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Atomic Rooster, Uriah Heep all left their musical marks on our writing and playing. In the
70’s, we started listened to a lot of American bands like Kansas, Journey, Rush and Spock’s Beard to keep our
creative juices flowing. This new album continues where last year’s “GOT YOUR SIX” left off: songs of hope and
inspiration featuring our signature guitar sounds, synth melodies, straight ahead drumming with just a few
chanting monks thrown in for good measure.

• If you had to flee the country as a band, where would you choose to live?

Probably the UK – as we cut our musical teeth on England’s prog rock scene, we would feel very comfortable
relocating there… and we wouldn’t have to learn to speak a new language.

• What’s the ‘wow factor’ that makes YOU decide which songs to keep, record and release?

Even after all this years, the guys get together every week to rehearse, jam and write. There are mountains of
ideas (all recorded during rehearsals) that we regularly revisit to see what riffs and chord patterns jump out to
our ears. The thinking is – if it moves us musically, it should resonate well with our fans and friends. Some ideas
are just throwaways… but quite often we will listen back and look at each other smiling and shaking our heads
“Yup…that’s pretty good”. We take those ideas and polish them to a very Sweet Crystal sheen.

• What’s the most hilarious band memory you can think of?

We had just added two great female backup singers to our live show and their first concert with us was an
outdoor festival to benefit homeless veterans. Just as we welcomed them both onstage and launched into their
first song, the skies opened up in a veritable monsoon of wind and rain, wiping out all the players on stage and
stopping the event. We had talked about ”getting their feet wet” with us… but this was way more than anyone
bargained for. Thankfully our next show is indoors.

• What would be the title of the band’s biography?

Still Reaching The World, One Song At A Time™

• What’s the next milestone you’d like to achieve as a band?

After winning 24 Detroit Music Awards over the last 8 years in every Outstanding Gospel/Christian category
available… it’s probably time to set our sights on the Grammys.

Marq Andrew Speck – lead vocals, anything with keys
Bill Blatter –vocals, anything with strings
Steve Wieser – anything hit with sticks
Martin Kuchar – vocals, anything bass and mo’ bass

Thank you Chelf for your interest – you definitely are a blessing to the band!
