This morning in the Metal Digest office we’re cranking up the volume on ‘Black Winter Day’, the 1995 EP from Amorphis. For many Amorphis fans, this period in the band’s history is their favourite, the Finnish band blended melodic death metal with large amounts of doom and the spoken word parts of a traditional Finnish poem to create something rather special. These days, ‘Black Winter Day’ is often overlooked due to it being tagged on the end of the remaster for ‘Tales from the Thousand Lakes’, but standing alone, this is an excellent EP that showed the band in a creative peak. So this morning, dig out your copy or whizz forward to those bonus tracks and take in a great EP the way it was meant to be heard. Loud.
