It’s been nearly 14 years since Ereb Altor burst onto the scene in 2008 with their excellent debut album ‘By Honour’. Since then, the Swedish band have evolved their sound from epic doom to black metal all whilst keeping the Viking dream alive and this year has Ereb Altor returning for the first time since 2019 with their latest album ‘Vargtimman’.

As an album ‘Vargtimman’ continues to plough down the blackened route, but Ereb Altor know what they’re doing, this is a skill that they have been honing for years and years with a sound which was alluded to on their 2021 EP. Much like that, ‘Vargtimman’ takes the listener on a journey through Pagan Scandinavia with songs such as ‘Fenris’, ‘Den Dighra Döden’ and ‘I Have the Sky’ which swing from hearty singsongs to all out first wave black metal in approx. 42 mins, getting in and out without ever overstaying its welcome all wrapped up in a wonderful production having all the enjoyability of Bathory, Falkenbach and early Enslaved.

There is a lot of Bathory worship here and I mean… a lot. But is that a bad thing? No. If you’re going to worship at an altar, Bathory is a bloody good shout, yet this does mean that ‘Vargtimman’ will not appeal to everyone. However, for those it does appeal to, they’ll find a solid album of black metal.

"a solid album of Bathory inspired black metal"
