There is no denying it, scratch beneath the polished veneer of what the mainstream rock and metal media spoon feed the masses (you know who I’m talking about) and you’ll find a plethora of bands and genres dying to get their name out there. One such band are Blood Sport who, having only recently formed, have released their debut EP ‘Hot Blood and Cold Steel’.
As far as EP’s go, the Finns have delivered something which is actually very good, this is a furious album of speed metal which leans heavily on a NWOBHM sound therefore also digging into that burgeoning trad metal scene. This is an exciting release by Blood Sport as tracks such as ‘Machine Gun’, ‘Agitator’ and ‘Steel System’ get in and out without wasting any time with no track topping 3:30 having all the appeal of Acid, Venom and early Slayer whilst also pushing into Judas Priest, Sentinel Beast and Enforcer territory.
Naturally, there isn’t anything new here, fans of trad and speed metal will know exactly what ‘Hot Blood…’ sounds like. Yet, this isn’t a bad thing, this is a fantastic EP which shows Blood Sport are capable of making a release which can make heads turn in the metal world; it sets them up very nicely for a studio album and if it is anything like ‘Hot Blood…’ it will be utterly superb.
"a fantastic EP of speed metal"
