Finland is the land of the midnight sun and the perpetual night. So when it comes to doing black metal which sits on the darker side of the psyche, it is no surprise that when Finland stick their hat in the ring, they do it really well. One such band are Darkwoods My Betrothed (DMB) who have made a comeback with ‘Angel of Carnage Unleashed’ their first album in 23 years.
If there is any way to return in style, then with ‘Angel…’ DMB do it with all the pomp and ceremony of a royal engagement fanfare. This is an absolutely stellar album of black metal that has DMB returning to their witch hunt roots with all the gusto of a Matthew Hopkins inquisition as tracks such as ‘In Evil, Sickness and in Grief’, ‘In Thrall to Ironskull’s Heart’ and ‘Black Fog and Poison Wind’ roar with primal black metal vigour before being traded off against more thoughtful atmospheric passages and ambience courtesy of the virtuoso musician Tuomas Holopainen; a moments respite before the onslaught begins again.
For fans of DMB, the release of such as good album is a real Holy Grail of Finnish black metal. ‘Angel…’ manages to tie into the roots of DMB without ever compromising the bands past or present and this opens up a brand new chapter in the history of DMB and the future looks bright.
