Me(n)tal Health Focus: Artist Spotlight | Konstantinos Sotirelis | Serpent Lord

This month is a very special one for Metal Digest and we are *so* stoked to bring you along this journey.

We are hosting a Mental Health Focus campaign with Heavy Metal Therapy.

Our goal and aspiration is to post our stories, educate, share resources, encourage our readers to talk about mental health, and most importantly create a community bound with the sounds of heavy metal, so that we are all, less alone.

You shared your stories and we keep the conversation going.

In this episode Konstantinos Sotirelis of Serpent Lord shared a few thoughts.

“Well, I’m definitely not good at this. But I can share a story of mine.

Some of you may relate, others may find it interesting, but if by sharing this story I get to help someone or myself, then it is worth trying.

You know, the lockdown period was really difficult. Not just for me, not just for my band. For everyone. It was something unexampled; we didn’t know what’s coming. I don’t know about the difficulties in other countries, but here in Greece, at first, we thought that this is gonna to last just for some days. At first, it was like a vacation, and then it was hell. We couldn’t go outside, we didn’t know how our lives will be and for me as a musician, it made me think that my tiny career has over. The only thing that made me hope was music. I started writing our next album. I tried to be involved in this all the time of the day, every day. I managed to write a whole album and so many songs in a couple of months. So, this kept me alive and I didn’t get depresseded back then, like everyone else.

So, I am coming on today, where things are different. We are not in a lockdown (yet), but everything is uncertain. And I am not talking about the pandemic. I am talking about myself.

I feel that there is no place for me. That I haven’t found where I belong, what I want.

I can’t find who I am and this is something that makes me cry, that makes me feel pain and it stresses me. I feel exhausted but there is something in my life that keeps me on my feet when I feel that I will fall down. This is music.

The last few days I feel wretched and I think that now it’s the time for me to grab my bass again and write some new music. This is my savior. “Music my savior, save me”, Rob Flynn sings on ‘Darkness Within’. This is what I am going to sing now, too.

PS: Cry. Don’t let anyone tell you that you shouldn’t even it’s your wife, girlfriend, brother, mother, father, etc. Boys or girls. Just cry if you feel like it.”
