Studio albums, live albums, EPs, box sets, compilations, these are the things that we regularly get to consume, but every now and then, a demo lands on the desk, providing just that little bit of something different to the regular day to day occurrences. Although only formed last year in the midst of a pandemic, it hasn’t deterred Atonement from stepping out of Sweden this year with their demo tape ‘Merciless Blasphemy’.

A demo… the listener knows immediately that the production isn’t going to be great. Why would it be? It’s a fucking demo. But, having a production like this gives the ‘Merciless Blasphemy’ an air of real integrity, it’s happening now, and you may as well be sat in the rehearsal room with Atonement. These guys know how to get that blackened thrash sound that they are hammering out as ‘Merciless Blasphemy’ has all the sound of the early work of Slayer, Kreator and Sodom alongside newer bands like Eternal Evil, Odium and Sarcator with tracks such as ‘Axe of Death’ and ‘Unholy Sorcery’ literally worshipping at their altars.

For a demo of some blackened thrash, the listener knows what they are going to get with ‘Merciless Blasphemy’, it doesn’t do anything unexpected, and it is the sound of a band finding their feet and identity. Atonement have got a good sound going on and with a few tweaks here and there, it’ll be interesting to see how this band develops.

"a decent demo that pays homage to the bands inspirations"
