When it comes to heavy and power metal, in fact all genres, there is a lot of generic stuff out there. A few times a year, an album is released which makes the listener sit up straight and go, damn straight, this is why I love this genre! Manimal have already achieved that once this year with their superb ‘Chains of Fury’ EP and now the band are back with their latest studio album ‘Armageddon’.

In essence, this could easily be ‘Chains of Fury’ part 2, all the songs that were released on that previous EP are featured here with what is essentially five new songs. However, that doesn’t stop ‘Armageddon’ from being any less apocalyptic. This is an album where the magic seems to have come together, this is heavy/power metal at its peak as Manimal hammer the anvil hard, paying no heed to the sparks that fly. Tracks such as ‘Burn in Hell’ and ‘Forged in Metal’ trade off against ‘Chains of Fury’ and ‘Master of Pain’ with all the power Judas Priest, Primal Fear and Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens with even a little of Dio fronted Black Sabbath thrown in for good measure. All this wouldn’t be possible without the phenomenal vocals of Sam Nyman who masterfully guides excellent riffage forward as he screams like Rob Halford in his prime.

If Manimal delivered something excellent with their ‘Chains of Fury’ EP, then the Swedes have gone one step further with ‘Armageddon’. Forget the new KK’s Priest album because ‘Armageddon’ is where it is at in 2021.

"Manimal go one step further than their 'Chains of Fury' earlier in the year"
