Italy’s Instrumental Stoner Metal trio Prehistoric Pigs will soon be releasing “The Fourth Moon”, their fourth full-length album of deeply downbeat psychedelic meanderings. Formed in 2012, brothers Jacopo and Juri Tirelli, along with cousin Mattia Piani, they have stayed true to their Psych/Stoner stylings throughout from 2012’s “Wormhole Generator” to upcoming “The Fourth Moon”.

From the moment opening track “CBS” gets started, the listener can rest assured that the next 40 or so minutes will be spent way down a fantastical technicolour rabbit hole of deliciously chunky sonic splendour. Riffing like Kyuss on different drugs, blending the Krautrock of Earthling Society and Taras Bulba effortlessly, and creating a tone-poem depicting epic vistas and dark starry skies (viewed lay flat on your back in the cool desert night air of course), “The Fourth Moon” adds further to this by adding some surprisingly heavy elements. Really heavy.

Bringing fast and heavy Motorhead inspired riffage to a Stoner party? Surely there’s rules about that sort of thing. Prehistoric Pigs seem able to change out the tone, heaviness, and tempi, with consummate ease, making this album an entertaining listen all the way through. You get all the expected Stoner Rock/Metal stylings and tropes; here though you get hints and allegations of other worlds of sound, heavier ones.

"This could be overlooked in a year that’s seen a welcome resurgence in the Stoner subgenres; it deserves its time in the (desert) sun"
