Ten years… these days it feels like a decade passes so quickly and almost without thought or sentimentality. However, one genre which does sentimentality better than any other is Irish folk and this year has The O’Reillys and the Paddyhats (OatP) returning to celebrate their ten-year anniversary in style with ‘In Strange Waters’, a reworking of ten tracks from bands back catalogue.

It takes some great skill to head into your back catalogue and rework songs that you have you been playing for years into something new, but OatP have managed that and with ease. Not only have the band created some wonderful reworkings, but they have also delivered these through a hugely sleek and professional finish which only adds to the overall sound. Unlike the bands usual work in Irish folk/punk, these reworkings take in elements of sea shanty, ska, heavy metal and even pop, not only showing how good this band is at song crafting, but just how versatile OatP are.

However, as sleek and well-crafted as this work is, these reworkings are decent in passing, but are they going to bring in new fans? Quite possibly not and ‘In Strange Waters’ may not even bring in those passing fans. But what this album does appeal to are those hardcore fans of the band and genre who will adore these versions. So, pour yourself a whiskey, better make that three because these ‘In Strange Waters’ demands it and thoroughly adds to the overall enjoyment of the record.
