Questions on the Go | Tarah Who?

Tarah Who? Well, “she” equals “they,” and “they’re” a power duo masterminded by grunge-punk sage Tarah Carpenter, a firebrand front-woman who channels explosive emotionality into rousing anthems. The Ladies of Tarah Who? Are fired up, inspired, and tighter as friends and musicians. Drummer Coralie Herve shares a thought: “When I first met Tarah, it floored me how bold she is; I felt this exuberance and fire from her. It reminded me of why I play music in the first place.”

We got to ask them a few questions on the go.

Please describe the band in a single sentence.

CH  We are a rock duo called Tarah Who playing some raw and heavy music.

TGC I am going to use a sentence from an article that I thought was a pretty accurate description ‘The band who channels explosive emotionality into rousing anthems’ – The big takeover.

What’s your latest project and what are you working on right now

CH  We just released our new album called Supposedly, A Man, we are really excited about it !!! You can listen to it and find it on any streaming platform.

TGC Yes, our latest album was released on Sept 24th. We worked on it during the lockdown via zoom and recorded it in 2 days during covid curfews and the US elections!

We are currently working on new songs and new music videos, getting all geared up for 2022.)

How do you want people to feel when they listen to your music?

TGC Depends on which song they listen to. For the most part, inspired. This new album is a little bit special. It was supposed to be called ‘Exposed’ because I opened up for the first time on a few topics that I generally wouldn’t. ‘Bad Time’ for instance is about finally saying out loud what happened as a child. There is never a good time to talk about these things and in my experience, I was afraid of the repercussions and not being heard. Years went by and I was even wondering if people would even believe me at this point. So, for this song, I guess I hope that anyone in this situation can feel or hear that they are not alone and whatever you have to do, only do it in your own time but I do think it is important to eventually say something just to prevent the predator to continue hurting other victims.

Major influences Who put you on this path?

CH  For me it’s Nightwish, a symphonic metal band from Finland, I love this genre !!! More generally I will say metal and classic rock.

TGC I was really into Alanis Morissette, then I discovered The distillers, Pantera, Motorhead, Tool, RATM, etc…. so basically 90s grunge and rock are my main influence. When I started playing music, as a drummer and a bass player, I just wanted to play because it made me feel whole. To this day, I feel really angry and miserable really when I don’t play. No the best company to be around. I think music is my therapy and If I don’t let it out, it bottles up and really turns me into someone pretty sour!  lol!

Despite my influences, I never wanted to sound like or be like a band. I have always wanted to do my own thing, which was, what makes me feel alive and in the moment. There are moments when you play, where everything connects and I live for those moments.

If you had to flee the country as a band, where would you choose to live?

CH  I don’t really know,  there are so many places to discover !!! But right now I kind of want to check out Canada.

TGC For music, I would say Australia. I love Canada and the United Kingdom and they have a great music scene obviously but I can’t do cold and rain 360 days of the year. I have always wanted to go to Australia and I hear there is a pretty good rock scene over there!

What’s the ‘wow factor’ that makes YOU decide which songs to keep, record and release?

TGC It is 2 things. When I write, it usually comes out like a burst of emotions. I am pretty simple, probably because I don’t write music and I didn’t go to music school. It is either I like it or I don’t, I can remember it or I don’t. If I like it, I will play it over and over. If I come back to it and I don’t remember it, in my head it means it wasn’t good enough, moving on. The beauty about being an independent band is that you can choose what goes on your record next. Tarah Who songs are autobiographical. They usually are keepers because they are a timeline to my life and events that happened such as terrorist attacks etc…

What’s the most hilarious band memory you can think of?

TGC There are a few inside jokes that Coco and I have but It would be hard to explain… I would say the time I booked us at a strip club without knowing that it was a strip club. We arrived and we saw all the nude and sex signs and we were like wait.. what when we parked we already had the owners greeting us so we were at the right place! Before coming in, we were given a set of rules to follow that protects the girls, and then we played one amazing show! one of the most memorable shows for sure!

What would be the title of the band’s biography?

CH  Just for fun I would call it Who is Tarah Who Hahahaha.

TGC I like it Coco!  Yeah, I think that’s a good one! or like we hear 90% of the time when we tour  Tarah… WHO

What’s the next milestone you’d like to achieve as a band?

CH  I think having a Grammy, it would be amazing !! We are working on it hahahaha.

TGC Yeah.. winning a Grammy would mean so much more than just us, Tarah Who winning. It would change the course of the music industry and give hope to independent bands and especially women in rock music.

So not for us, but for all of the independent artists who, like us, started from nothing but a passion for music and something to say, we would love to make that happen.
