The Big 4… blah blah blah, what band would you replace from the Big 4… blah blah blah, what band would you add to make a Big 5… blah blah blah. The same boring rhetoric that has been played out over and over again on internet forums for the best part of 20 odd years. Those who spend their time actually listening to thrash metal instead of just debating the same four albums, they’ll find Overkill and this year has the band releasing ‘The Atlantic Years: 1986-1994’, a six CD box set containing; ‘Taking Over’, ‘Under the Influence’, ‘The Years of Decay’, ‘Horrorscope’, ‘I Hear Black’ and ‘W.F.O.’.

In all seriousness, where can you go wrong with this collection? There are literally four classic albums here that are some of the best thrash metal albums of all time and that would be enough even without the latter two albums. Those last two albums may pale in comparison to the previous four, but they are still great releases and to have them all in one box set is a rather large bonus. There is actually nothing here that can be said about these albums that hasn’t already been studied, reviewed, digested, regurgitated and eaten again and the listener will know exactly what they are getting. However, there are those fans of thrash who will naturally own a large chunk if not all of these albums already and if that is the case, then there are actually no extras here, no bonus tracks or anything of any note that will make those who already own these albums to repurchase.

All in all, this is an excellent collection of Overkill at their earlier peak and if you don’t own these album already, then ‘The Atlantic Years…’ is a must have for any would-be Overkill/thrash fanatic.

"A must have for any Overkill/thrash fan... providing you don't already own them"
