A Chat With The Agonist

Based out of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, The Agonist are a melodic death metalcore band that have been tearing up stages since 2004, with 6 full-length studio albums under their belts they have just released a new EP on Napalm Records which was recently reviewed by Metal Digest’s very own Adam McCann.

Metal Digest had a chat with The Agonist about the lockdowns, their new ‘Days Before The World Wept’ EP & what is next on the books for them.

Hello Agonists! It’s great to have a chance to chat with you & ask a few questions. How is everything going over there with your new release?

So far, great! People are digging the direction we’ve taken, good reviews are pouring in, and our fans are happy. We are confident with the music and it’s rewarding when people seem to get what you do, of course!

Although the last few years have been tough you’ve managed to pull through it with new material! What kept you motivated & inspired through all the hard times of the 2020 lockdowns?

We are musicians and music is what we do. I think maybe everyone had a sort of wake-up call when the pandemic slowed things down. “What do I really want to do with the rest of my life?” Well, we’re still here and no plans of slowing down anytime soon, so I think just the joy of creating art is what kept us going. I felt for the newer up-and-coming bands… Having plans shattered when you’re trying to lift off the ground and make a name for yourself is devastating. I know that personally for myself, writing music and enjoying the finer things in life really kept me going!

The title of your new EP ‘Days Before The World Wept’ is very fitting for the current times. Was there a clear vision going into the writing process to follow when you first started this new project?

I think that the whole thematic and lyrical process occurred very naturally for our singer Vicky. This was one of those things where it was just easy to write, and kind of came out almost on its own. That is always great because this kind of unfiltered writing is usually the best.  I recall reading over the lyrics for the title track “Days Before The World Wept”  and feeling very moved by them. I asked Vicky “What inspired you to write these awesome lyrics?” and she just kind of shrugged happily.  She clearly knew the answer but there was no point in explaining because it just came from inside.

I am loving the track ‘Remnants In Time’, a modern metal masterpiece, very well composed & produced with a truly apocalyptic climax leading back into the serene piano outro tying back into how it all started.

Could you let us in on some of your thoughts during the composition & production of the new EP?

We took the approach of all killer, no filler. Because we agreed that we would be doing an EP and we were only going to be working with five songs, we knew that there had to be no room for people to get bored. We also collaborated a lot more between Vicky, Danny, and me in regards to song structuring. Especially Vicky, who had a lot more say in guitar and drum arrangement this time around. We literally tore apart and put back together some songs. One of the songs on the EP sounds very different from when it was first conceived. It’s usually pretty hard to put three heads together and not have them bump, but in this case, it worked quite well, and I think this type of collaboration is the way we will work going forward.

What is next for The Agonist? Any huge bookings? Is there anything still to tick off the band’s bucket list?

Yes, we are working on booking tours and fests for ’22 for sure.  We’d love to get to Wacken but haven’t made it there yet for whatever reason.

Along the path to metal world conquest, you must have come across some fantastic artists & individuals. Is there anyone you would like to give a special shout-out & thanks to?

I mean, we’ve met Devin Townsend several times before and he’s always a gentleman, even though we always seem to catch him at the worst possible times.  During dinner, coming off stage tired and sweaty, etc.  So I guess I could say thanks to Devy for always being a sweetheart.  Oh and, one time Mikael from Opeth took a call from his mother in the middle of a conversation with us, that was kinda funny. But I would definitely thank those 2 guys for their massive contributions to the world of metal that we know and love.

Thank you for your time & for answering our questions. Is there anything you would like to tell our audience?

Yeah, thanks for checking out our new EP and we can’t wait to take this stuff to the stage!  Seeya out there!

Thank you for the wonderful interview.

Until we meet again,

Milton on behalf of Metal-Digest.

Be sure to check out their new EP ‘Days Before The World Wept’ out now on Napalm Records!
