To say that Sepultura’s discography is patchy is a relative understatement, but last year the band delivered a colossal haymaker with their ‘Quadra’ album which saw Sepultura silence even some of their most vocal critics. With lockdowns and an enforced break, Sepultura have kept themselves busy by releasing ‘SepulQuarta’, an album of re-recorded songs featuring a plethora of guests from the world of rock and metal.

Now, Sepultura don’t do themselves any favours, they often leave themselves open to the same rhetoric that has followed the band around since Max Cavalera left the band 20 odd years ago. Therefore, the re-recording of Sepultura songs from as far back as ‘Beneath the Remains’, will do nothing but provide endless bait for the chittering of the internet. That being said, these re-records do actually sound decent and why wouldn’t they? Andreas Kisser, Paulo Jr. and Derrick Green have been playing these some of these songs for the best part of 20 years now, it is no skin off their nose to go into a studio and record them and the addition of guests such as Scott Ian, Danko Jones, Fernanda Lira and Alex Skolnik is a great bonus to celebrate the legacy of the band.

However, that is all this release is, new fans to Sepultura will still go out and pick up ‘Roots’, ‘Chaos A.D.’ et al., whilst those passing followers of the band will probably give ‘SepulQuarta’ a wide berth and that ultimately leaves this collection of re-recordings for hardcore fans only and if you’re not one of them, then it’ll probably provide very little joy.

only really for hardcore fans and collectors
