So…in case you were having a good day or something, let me bring you down…way down. Finnish musician Teemu Toikka has created the perfect dismal landscape to extinguish any glimmer of light you may have.
This beautifully recorded EP is about a man suffering from depression and becoming a father all while the world is ending. As if one of these things was not daunting enough. Divided into three numbered tracks, it is an exploration of the pain of existence, mental health, and all the effects therein. Central to all the tracks is a trudging Doom Metal track with measured doses of shifting melodies. There are slight variations in tempo as the narrative changes, but generally, the songs keep to a dirge-like pace. Ideal for lines like:
“How can we look into your eyes and pretend it will be alright?”
“The dark consumes me. The light destroys me. No sense in being. No sense in believing. All is without meaning.”
There is a palpable sense of despair in the lyrics, but the real “dark star” is the vocals. Toikka’s tortured screams tell his story brilliantly (or horribly, depending on your viewpoint.) Without lyrics at hand, the words are mostly unintelligible, but it is crystal clear what he is conveying.
There is no joy here. A great musical experience, but no joy. Perhaps there is a flicker to be found in that Toikka has channelled his misery constructively into extremely compelling music and in that, we can find solace. Yeah, let’s go with that.
